San Diego

As some of you may have seen, there are different locations in California, beautifully painted on me. The featured location this week is San Diego, and current EIM student Haley McKay told me all about her connections with the beautiful city down south! Keep reading to find out more!

"Over the past few years, San Diego has become a home away from home for me and a place I love to visit any chance I get. I’m originally from the Bay Area and although there are beaches in Northern California, it was hard not to crave a beach day down the coast. My family started visiting San Diego when my siblings and I were really little and we’d spend a couple weeks there every summer just for fun. During our trips down there, we’d always visit the San Diego Zoo which is located in Balboa Park. Being a little kid, I remember how much fun it was to go on train rides around the park, feed the birds, and run around on the play structures. The San Diego Zoo was such a fun place to visit as a family years back, but it’s just one of the many attractions San Diego has to offer. On my family trips we would also spend many of our days relaxing at the various beaches along the coast of the big city, our favorite area being La Jolla. In our younger years we could be amused for hours building sand castles, but as we got older we started renting surfboards, boogie boards, and kayaks. We’d also visit Lego Land, walk down the piers, and ride bikes along the boardwalk. San Diego is home to so many cherished childhood memories but my love for this special city doesn’t stop there.

When I was in high school, my older brother went off to college at San Diego State University, which my family was excited about because it meant another reason to visit San Diego. Visiting at an older age showed me a whole other side to the city and it got even better when I started school at Cal Poly because it cut the distance in half. Today, my brother lives just a few footsteps from the boardwalk in Pacific Beach, by far my favorite beach in San Diego. For most of the year, it’s filled with people enjoying the sun, playing in the warm waves, or entertaining friends with games like beach volleyball. The area is full of local restaurants, bars, and shops making it the perfect place to spend the day. Now that I’m older, I usually make my trips down to San Diego with friends and we spend the weekend relaxing at the beach, discovering new restaurants, and hiking the beautiful trails of Torrey Pines. I’m so thankful that San Diego became a part of my life at a young age with trips with my family and that it’s remained a consistent place of escape ever since."

Thanks for sharing, Haley! I’m glad you were able to have a Learn by “Mooing” experience in San Diego, as it is such a huge part of me.

Thanksgiving

Aren’t you all excited for Thanksgiving?! Not only do we get a week off of school this year but we get to spend more time with our friends and family! Reflecting on my year, I have found several things that I am grateful for this year. Primarily, the Experience Industry Management Department at Cal Poly. They have brought me to life and given me a purpose. Do you all know my purpose?

My purpose is to benefit all of the Experience Industry Management students. In May 2017, I will be auctioned off and all the money raised will go directly back to the students. Some of the benefits you will see are increased money for scholarships, increased money for field trips, and other Learn by Moooing opportunities. Isn’t that great?!

Here are some examples of these awesome opportunities Dr Lin is hoping to have:

1. "The opportunity for some EIM students to the Meeting Professional International annual conference in June of 2017 in Las Vegas, which would provide attendees with the skills, professional development, and experiences that will help them do their job better and grow as a professional.”

2. “Another event would be the Dreamforce Conference in San Francisco in October of 2017. DF is the largest proprietary conference in the US. The EIM students could take advantage of the backstage tour and learn about the most up to date trends and techniques on convention and meeting management.”

This photo is from Dreamforce 2016!

**The money the cow raises could help pay for some of the attendance fees, travel fees, and hotel fees, but not always the whole experience.

Secondly, I am grateful for all of the students in the Experience Industry Management. You all have been so nice to me! I am complimented frequently and voted for every day. I just feel so loved.

I hope this Thanksgiving you have time to reflect about what you’re grateful for and are surrounded by loved ones. I can’t wait to see you all back on campus!!

Morro Bay and Cayucos

As some of you may have seen, there are different locations in California, beautifully painted on me. The featured locations this week will be Morro Bay and Cayucos, and current EIM Student Bianca Grauss told me all about why she has come to love each place during her last four years at Cal Poly, so keep reading to find out!!

“Morro Bay has become one of my favorite beach towns to spend the day with friends and family when they come to town. Although running around SLO will never get old, I find that Morro Bay has a completely different atmosphere than the downtown SLO we have at heart of our college town. The quaint seaside village has an old town feel full of many opportunities for people to spend the entire day there such as kayaking, fishing, visiting museums and art galleries, and of course...eating! If you're a seafood lover then look no further - Morro Bay has some of the best seafood I've ever had. If you're not into seafood don't worry, there's just about everything else to choose from too! Many to all of the restaurants have patio dining which allows you to look out into the bay and search for otter while enjoying your meal. I recommend taking a boat tour around the bay, the tour guide is hilarious and we learned a ton about the area including the story behind the infamous "Morro Rock." If you can, grab a hot cocoa from one of the many local coffee shops and stick around for the killer sunset!

Nestled in between Morro Bay and Cambria on Highway 1 is the rustic and relaxing beach town of Cayucos. My first time to Cayucos was for an RPTA Lab with Dr. Ru's class where we hiked the Estero Bluffs Trail and learned from a local tour guide about native and invasive species of the land as well as sustainability efforts to protect the beautiful and colorful coastline. I was eager to return and explore more of Cayucos after that, so I dragged my roommates into town with me the next weekend to see what this stunning place was all about! The downtown was lined with unique boutiques and restaurants, many old with character and some new. We quickly learned from one of the many locals that no trip to Cayucos is complete without a trip to the Brown Butter Cookie Company to taste and purchase the best cookies on the coast. He wasn't kidding - we all ended up buying at least one of every flavor! Whether you're looking to surf, hike the breathtaking coastline or enjoy a perfect ocean view, Cayucos is a hidden gem on the Central Coast.”

Thanks for sharing, Bianca! I’m glad you were able to have a Learn by “Mooing” experience in both Morro Bay and Cayucos, as it is such a huge part of me.

One of my favorite parts in Morro Bay are all the cute otters! Can you spot the otter that is painted on me?

Destination of the Week: Lake Tahoe

As some of you may have seen, there are different California locations beautifully painted on me. The featured location this week is Lake Tahoe, and current EIM Student Tori Perrella told me all about why she loves Lake Tahoe, so keep reading to find out!!

Tori at her favorite place!

“Lake Tahoe has always been my second home since the moment I was born. Every winter and summer growing up, I would visit to ski, hike, boat on the lake, and spend quality time with my family. Tahoe is a place for me to unplug and spend time with the people I love the most, without any distraction of technology and a busy schedule. Two summers ago, I was lucky enough to live in Lake Tahoe for the entire summer and have a learn by doing experience while working at a hotel and restaurant on the West Shore. Living up there for an entire summer made me really appreciate all that this area has to offer, with its countless hike trails, restaurants, beaches, and campgrounds. One of my favorite places to visit in the summer is DL Bliss State Park; the turquoise water and sandy beach make it the perfect place to spend a day at with family and friends. Lake Tahoe will always have a special place in my heart and I am excited to continue supporting this area for the rest of my life.”

Thanks for sharing, Tori! I’m glad you were able to have a Learn by “Mooing” experience in Tahoe, as it is such a huge part of me.

Why You Should Vote For Me

Thank you for everyone who came out to my Halloween party yesterday! I had a great time passing out candy and many people voted for me. For those of you who need some convincing, let me explain why you should vote for me!

Currently, there are 101 cows in the SLO Cow Parade. Each day you are allowed to cast ONE VOTE for your favorite cow. Why is it important you may ask? Because on May 6, 2017 the top 10 cows with the most votes will go straight to auction! Once I am bought, the money will go to benefit EIM students by creating scholarships, taking students on awesome field trips, and other Learn By Doing opportunities!

Since election day is just around the corner and you are all in the voting spirit, get MOOOOving and vote for me by clicking on the link below! Or if you stop by to say hi to me, check out the QR code that I’ll be wearing. All you have to do is SNAPCHAT the code and click “open link,” then press the “vote for me” red button! The EIM students, department, and myself will thank you!
